Top 6

Top 6 for the Week:
(Our vacation was SO much fun and took up FOUR days of the week).

6.  COLD.  I'm not sure where the hot weather went...but I don't mind the fall like weather.  AS long as we still get it IN the fall.  Felt strange putting pants and sweatshirts on.  Too bad I didn't pack enough warm clothes for the trip.  Just means less laundry though;o)

5.  Play dates.  We had two play dates this week that were playground picnics.  So nice to get out and enjoy the nice weather with friends.  Kids love these days too.

4.  Cuddles.  I had a lot of great cuddles from BOTH kids this week.  Before, during, and after rest time.  Nothing like having your 4 year old hugging and kissing you.  Or your 2 year old falling asleep in your arms.  Love these times.  SO much.

3.  Clayisms.  He was rather calm this week.  In fact, we didn't really have anything that was out of the ordinary.  He loves people.  Still continuing to connect to strangers, friends, and family without saying much.  He's SO social, yet only says a few words.  Everyone still digs his hair.  I swear he gets more comments on his hair than I do with anything else!

2.  Malloryisms.  I'm glad I have good memories of last week, because this week is seeming to be different! Ha!  She was really sweet and helpful last week.  Mal and I had a LOT of great moments together--especially during Clay's rest time.  She still continues to amaze me with her observations, love of nature, and intuitiveness.  She's definitely becoming more social--answering questions when asked by strangers or friends.  And she's interested in being part of a group.  She also has the BEST eyes ever!  On our way to a play group she caught sight of a buck in a person's driveway.

1.  Our FIRST Family Vacation.  THE BEST.  So relaxing, easy-going, fun, and SO kid friendly.  Thanks to my dear friend of 25 years, her husband, and their 4 kids.  From the Children's Museum to the amusement park to just being home and playing outdoors to thrifting for 5 hours to playing cards to sleepover haven for the girls--it was pure bliss.  Hubbies got along.  Kids got along (Helen--the oldest--was the favorite for my two.  She was the older "sister" for Mal and she doted on Clay.  Win. Win).  And Sarah and I had a MUCH needed time away just the two of us shopping and lunch.  We also had a couples date night away to which my friend's in-laws graciously watched and fed our kids.  We felt totally at ease and laid back the whole time.  We cannot thank them enough for the weekend!!  And we can't wait until next year for our 2nd ANNUAL Wisconsin trip!!

Side note:  The car ride was another story but I won't go into details of that because it then takes away from the JOY we found outside of the CAR.  (I'll just mention that we had to go back to our house TWICE once for Clay's medicine AND for once SHOES--Mal didn't even have a pair on!! Go figure!!).  The car ride there was pretty easy after that--with the help of THREE movies.  But the car ride home was horrible.  Enough said.

Hope you are enjoying your week!
I'm late.
But we are still on vacation recovery mode.

Tomorrow's August!
Yikes!
Mal starts school this month!
Yikes!

Take it easy.
Enjoy the last month:0(

Until next week,

Expect the Unexpected

Expect the Unexpected

This is something you learn teaching.
Nothing goes as you plan.
You always have to have a backup.
Be prepared for a fire drill, puking kid, birthday, etc.

It's even more true for a mother.
And I surely learned that this week.
From swallowing a quarter, to an ER visit, to just being home.

I've learned that going with the flow,
Slowing down,
And letting things go.
Helps.

Amen.
(And praying:o))

Top 10 for the Week:

It was QUITE the week...and as I cleaned up a poopy diaper IN the pool (both kids baths, clothes in washer, sanitize pool and toys) this afternoon...looks like this week may be following suit! HELP!

10.  It's here.  The horrible cold that overtook my nephew's body on the Fourth has finally reached our house.  Went through him & Nana and is now visiting Clayton and myself.  It's awful.  Clay has mainly a runny nose and horrible sounding cough.  I feel like crap--sore throat, runny nose, tired, headache.  I am SO bummed that this stupid cold may ruin our vacation plans for the end of this week.  We will see.

9.  ER visit.  Sir Clayton stepped on something at my in-laws.  A nasty cut.  Which became infected overnight.  A nice 2 hour trip to the ER produced a antibiotic for 10 days, 4 times a day.  Lovely.  But it looks a TON better.  Poor boy did not slow down one bit.  He is amazing I tell you.  And SO full of energy.  It was funny watching him on tip toe for JUST his left foot.

8.  Quarter.  Clayton swallowed a quarter this week.  Scared me to death.  Those 3-4 minutes of pure panic was the absolute worst and will never be forgotten.  Luckily, with the help of me hitting his back and his body doing what it's suppose to do, he did in fact throw it up.  Poor Mallory is scarred for life.  The whole time she kept asking me if she could go to her room so she didn't have to watch.  But we got through it.  And I still can't believe he did it.

7.  Tuesday BLISS.  We stayed home all day Tuesday.  It was so nice.  We played outdoors for over three hours in the morning--pool, sprinkler, play set, sand.  We had the best time and the kids were SO good.  Clay slept two hours that day!! Which is so unusual!  But now that I think about it, he was probably coming down with the cold.  LOVE days were we can just be with no rush, plans, or to-dos.

6.  Bug.  We had some weird flying, green grasshopper in our house this week.  Jay found it one morning on a cucumber slice on our cutting board.  Kids LOVED it.  And kept chasing it around our house.  For a few days.  They'd lose it.  And then he'd show up again.  It was funny.  Mal finally caught it one more time, put it in her critter house, and forgot about it.  She was quite bummed this morning when he wasn't moving.  "I think he's dead.  I'm so sad."  Yep.  He was in fact dead.  So much for cheap entertainment.

5.  T.V.  I'm realizing more and more that I am not a TV watcher.  But I am a Chef Ramsey fan.  Which means right now the ONLY show I watch is Master Chef.  I would rather read, bake/cook, sew, or putts around my house.  I would NOT have pictured myself this way.

4.  GR Visit.  Had a nice visit with my family up in GR for my brother's birthday.  Kids always love to see Hudson and he's getting so big.  I enjoyed the fact that he was holding his own with Clayton.  It's good to see that he's going to be able to keep Clayton in his place:o)

3.  Claytonisms.  He had TWO major blowouts this week.  Before I go into details, you have to understand that Clayton has NEVER had blowouts.  He was always a partial formula fed baby...so I feel that's why he never had what Mal had.  But this week was so strange.  One morning Jay and I noticed a pile of poop in the kitchen, cleaned it up, thinking it was the dog.  A few minutes later, one was found in Clay's room.  Come to find out, Clay's poop was trickling down his leg, and escaping through the bottom of his pant leg.  SERIOUSLY?!?!?!  It was gross.  Really gross.  And if that wasn't bad enough....a few days later he had one JUST before heading to the ER.  Somehow this time, instead of escaping out the bottom, it escaped out the top.  And then with the poopy in the tub today!!! What is up with this boy.  Or is it because he is a BOY.  On a much better note, I had the best cuddles with my little man this week.  One day after nap, he chose to truly cuddle with me.  Loved every second of it and the sweaty smell of him.  Why is it that I enjoy the sweaty smell of my kids?  That sounds gross.  Who knows.

2.  Malloryisms.  During Clay's long nap on Tuesday, Mal and I painted our nails.  I was impressed with her abilities!  She did her hands while I did her feet.  We also made strawberry ice cream from scratch (using two Ziploc bags--just like I used to do with my 5th graders!).  We had a great time together.  She had quite a feat this week.  She jumped off the diving board with her swimmies on!! This is huge people.  She hasn't been much of a swimmer...but this summer, she is coming around.  We are SO proud of her.  In fact, she even showed the video to our doctor.  She told Jay that "He was fascinated by it."  She's also been playing well with Clay lately.  I love how they can be such best bed.  This week I witnessed Mal tickling him so much that Clay couldn't stop laughing.  It was pure joy to see such a sweet moment.  They also played doctor together--to which Mal diagnosed Clayton has having no-talk-osis.  I think she may be watching Doc McStuffins too much :o)  A few other funnies about Mal:  She knows what a dead animal smells like.  "Do you smell that mom??  It smells like dead animal."  Sure was! Yucky!  And she called her armpit, an arm it.  "See mom, I'm going to wash my arm it."

1.  Night Out KidLESS.  Jay and I had a night out on Saturday night.  We almost didn't end up going due to our babysitter getting the flu and calling last minute.  But luckily Jay's parents were free and willing to take them for the night.  It was great to get out, enjoy friends, and not have to worry about the kids for a few hours.  We even spent some time on the back deck when we got home, until I started getting bit by mosquitoes.  It's amazing how ONE night away can make you feel somewhat normal again:o)

Well, I must be going.
Kids are up.
Time to head outside.

Hope all of you are enjoying your summer.

Until next week,
Mrs. Newell

SAHM (Stay-at-home-momma)

Sanity.
Is important.
Especially for Mommas.
And I have learned a few tricks,
To KEEP it there.

So, I thought I'd share a few.

I keep DumDums in the car.  For that five minutes of peace and quiet.  It's appreciated.
I have an oasis...on my back deck.  Kiddie pool, toys, umbrella, & a gate so they can't escape.
I keep our kid towels, shampoo, and soap in the bathroom (I didn't start doing this until recently and was like--why HAVEN'T I done this before?!?!)
I get my kids started on an activity (usually playdoh), before I start dinner.
I keep extra supplies in my car--bathing suit, clothes, diapers, sweatshirts, toilet paper, snacks.
I plan meals for the week and new recipes I'd like to try.
I always carry water for me--so my kids have a drink too when they need one.
I have LOTS of lists.  That have a tendency to carry over into the next day, week, month, season:o)
I have hand sanitizer EVERYWHERE.  House, car, purse.  Yes, I know my holistic doctor would frown.  But I'm not quite ready to give that up yet.
I let some things go.  I never thought I'd be such a laidback mom.  But I am.  And it also helps with my sanity.

I'm trying to do more chores in the evening or early morning, when the kids are either sleeping or just hanging low.  I find this really helps with their mood during the day because my attention is more on them (even if it's finding an independent activity for them to do).  This in turn truly helps with MY mood as well.

Some minutes* are more challenging than others.  Where I can't  seem to even find a morsel of sanity.   But there are MANY more minutes that I just find joy in doing what I am doing.

This SAHM is proud to be a SAHM.

*Notice I use MINUTES instead of DAYS.  Let's be honest with each other here.  Days have ups and downs in them.  And for me it's hard to even summarize the WHOLE day.  Yes, it was a good day--for the most part, except for....You get the idea.

Top 10 for the Week:

10.  Christmas Music.  Yeah, still listening to it.  In the car.  In July.  Per request of the 4 year old.

9.  Facebook Group.  So, I'm kinda feeling like a nerd.  But I started a group on Facebook.  A "Seeking Healthier Lifestyle" group.  I am extremely passionate about trying my best to live a healthier lifestyle by eating better for you foods.  I'm hoping this becomes a group that is able to share recipes, ideas, and resources.  I'm pretty excited about it--okay that's actually an understatement.  I'm floored about it!!  Next career path?!?!?! Maybe!! We will see.

8.  Chill Weekend.  No huge plans this past weekend again.  Which is always nice.  Finished a few things around the house and was able to just chill and enjoy being with each other.  Greatly appreciated.

7.  Old Friends.  Met up with a few old friends this past week on my travels.  Always good to see new babies and their mommas.  Hoping I can make a few more trips before the summer is over!

6.  Birthday Boy.  Spent 6 hours at a 5 year olds birthday party and had SO much fun!! We always enjoy our time with our group.  And so do the kids.  They are exhausted today!  And went down easy last night!

5.  Air Zoo.  When Clayton was up north, Mal and I had a chance to visit the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo with friends of ours.  SO much fun.  Mal loved going on the few rides they had there.  I can't even tell you how many times she went on them.

4.  Reunited.  It was so sweet so to watch the reunion of Clayton and Mallory.  After three days of not seeing each other, they couldn't stop hugging one another.  In fact, that night outside Mal even grabbed hold of him in the grass, pulled him down, and kissed him on the cheek.  It was so sweet.  It's good to see that they love each other.  Because they still fight quite a bit, but at least they get along WAY more.  They sure did miss each other!!  And I sure did MISS my boy.  I think he's glad to be home--even though Nana and Papa spoiled him rotten.

3.  Malloryisms.  There were a lot this week!  Considering that I only had her for three of those days!  She used the word lever correctly this week.  I can't remember what she was talking about--but I was shocked that she even knew the simple machine!  Her favorite phrase right now is..."that right?"  "I can go swimming, after I put on my bathing suit, that right mom?"  "You are not suppose to touch baby birds because then their mom want take care of them.  That right mom?"  "I can ride my bike down the road because I'm a big girl.  That right mom?"  Seriously.  It's in almost EVERY conversation we have.  Seeking my approval?? My support??  Or just my attention??

2.  Clayisms.  He enjoyed his time at my parents.  They made sure to send me pictures of him "helping" them with the construction on their new addition.  I guess he's a big fan of extension cords.  And he wasn't shy with the workers--continually talking to them and greeting them every morning.  I will never forget his face when he first saw me on FaceTime.  He was so confused and so sad.  It broke my heart.  And it was even worse the next time when Mal came running over to me, sat on my lap, and proceeded to hug and kiss ME.  In my head, I can only picture what was going through hers.  See Clay, I have mommy all to myself.  And I want you to notice that she is hugging me and that I AM WITH HER...not you.  I couldn't believe it.  But then again, I can:o)  Poor little Clay.  He's really been into trains lately (I might have said that last week).  But today he went into the toy room, grabbed the basket of trains, brought them out to the living room, and started making a track ALL ON HIS OWN.  It was so cute.  And it's hard for me to believe that he is getting to be a big boy too.

1.  Mallory Time.  Mal had NO PROBLEM taking up our time when Clay was gone.  She ate every last minute up.  And enjoyed it immensely.  She was a different kid.  Really.  Happy, patient, go-with-the-flow.  Not like she's never like that...but some days are definitely different than others.  I just noticed that she was a much happier kid when she got our FULL attention.  Who wouldn't be?!?!?!  And it was quiet.  Extremely quiet.  And bedtime and morning time was EASY.  Oh and the car ride--a piece of cake.  But we didn't laugh as much, run as much, do as much, as we would have with him home.  What I'm trying to say is--it was nice to have JUST Mallory with us.  BUT we sure did miss our boy and his happy, upbeat personality:o)

Well, the boy is about to wake I tell ya.
Hope you are all having a great Monday.

Last night, I thought yesterday was Saturday.
Not good.
But okay now.

Have a great week!
And I hope you are staying cool!!

Until next week,
Mrs. Newell

I Wish

I wish I had...

More time to read.
More time to sew.
More time to exercise.
More time to organize.
More time to clean.

But I know once I get all of this time,

I'll wish for...

More time to cuddle my babies.
More time to read books to them.
More time to swing with them.
More time to color with them.
More time to listen to them.
More time to love them.

It's hard for me to sit back and just enjoy this job of motherhood,
Without trying to do the things I want and LOVE to do.

Balance.
Patience.
Appreciation.

I need to remember these.
Every day.

Because....
"The days are long, but the years are short."

Top 10 for the Week:

10.  Color Singing.  Both of our kids sing when they color.  Never noticed this until someone during library time mentioned that Clayton was singing while coloring.  That very night, Mal was doing the same.  It MUST come from Jay.

9.  Preschool Buds.  We had a great play date with some preschool buddies.  It had been awhile since we met up and it was so fun for the kids to see each other.  Even if Clayton is NOW into pinching kids.  Out with the pushing, onto the pinching.  I loved watching Mal enjoy her time with her friends.

8.  Garden Goods.  Lots of yellow squash, zucchini, and green beans coming out of our garden!! A few cucumbers are extremely close.  Made some GF chocolate zucchini bread that was delicious!  And everything tastes SO much better out of our OWN garden.  Kids love it too.  In fact, Mal eats raw zucchini.  Both Jay and I think it's kinda gross...but she loves it:o)

7.  Wild Kratts.  An awesome animal kid cartoon (sometimes real) show.  Our kids will both watch in wonder.  If you haven't seen an episode--you must.

6.  Best Day to Travel.  Hands down.  Is July 5th.  Our kids were exhausted from the Fourth festivities...so both of them were either quiet or sleeping the entire trip up to Ludington.  Pure bliss.  Pure joy.  Pure amazement.  I see a repeat in our future.

5.  Oatmeal Packs.  I made my own.  Kids loved them.  Ate two batches one morning:o)  Feeling accomplished.  One less processed food in our pantry.

4.  Library.  We are actually doing both Decatur and Paw Paw library summer programs.  Yeah, I'm that mom.  But Mal loves it!  And it encourages her to read more--or for me to read to her.  I'm not the greatest at keeping track, but we do our best.  It's been fun to be able to reward her for a habit we've already formed.  Yeah for BOOKS and the library!!

3.  Malloryisms.  I love Mal's age.  She understands, can reason, asks questions, is social, just an all around fun age (ask me in a few days and this might be different!).  And she thinks I'm a genius. Several times a week I hear "great idea mom."  Makes me feel good.  And I'm carrying these little phrases with me until she's a teenager:o)  We did a lot in these past week or so.  Here are a few of my favorite quotes from her:  "I love Clay so much that I don't want to leave him here."  Referring to leaving him at my parents.  Look forward to my next week's blog where she LOVES being an only child:o)  "Is that the light castle?"  Referring to the lighthouse in Ludington.  Could be a castle!!:o)  She was SO good on the Fourth--quite the social butterfly.  Which, if you know her, is unusual.  BUT she truly does love being around people and friends.  Once she warms up to you.  She couldn't get enough of the sparklers, running around, swimming in the lake, and being with friends (which she calls anyone and everyone who she encounters her friend).  I love watching her.  Be her.  Be friendly.  I even got to witness her try and play rock, paper, scissors with a group of bigger kids.  It was so stickin adorable.  She had no clue what she was doing but she sure LOOKED like she did!  That's my gal.  Love her to pieces.

2.  Claytonisms.  Clay has truly been obsessed with two things this week.  His rain boots and one of Mal's dolls.  I think the rains boots are his favorite because he can put them on--and usually even on the right feet.  Maybe he feels like a big boy in them, not sure.  But he HAS to wear them all the time--even around the house.  And the baby doll.  He's still obsessed with babies.  Anytime we see one out in public, it's a direct path to him/her which he takes at a rapid speed.  The mommys seem okay with it...but I know Clayton.  He likes to squeeze.  So, I'm leery about him getting too close.  He was also great on the Fourth.  Especially at the parade.  He just watched in wonder and in awe.  Never running out or moving too far away from me.  He loved the water activities during the day (not so much swimming in the lake but the boat ride was a blast).  Fireworks weren't a hit either, but I think by that point he was exhausted from being ON all day.  I didn't mind rocking him to sleep while the fireworks show was on.  Once he finally fell asleep, Jay carried him out to the car.  I honestly thought he wasn't breathing--because he was so still and not moving.  He was one tired BOY.  Who I'm missing terrible.  And will see tomorrow:o)

1.  Holiday Weekend.  We had such a great Fourth of July weekend.  From being in Decatur to traveling up to Ludington...we had some great moments as a family.  Our kids were HUGE troopers.  Mal survived the WHOLE Fourth without a nap.  It's strange for me to think that she was awake the same amount of time I was and I was EXHAUSTED!  She held it together though!  And I still feel like I'm recovering.  We were able to go to the beach for the first time this year--kids loved it!  Clayton loved rolling around in the sand.  Mal loved splashing in the water.  Holidays just keep getting better and better as our kids get older:o)

Well, it's Tuesday.
I'm late.
But I made it.

AND tomorrow I get to see my little boy.
I'm a bit excited.

Have a great week!!
Until next week,
Mrs. Newell
